By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant George A. Irvine, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 5th Field Signal Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the operations of the 7th Infantry Regiment from 15 to 29 July 1918, Sergeant Irvine went out to repair a telephone line which was cut eight times. The last time, his battalion commander having told him to wait a few minutes, replied: “The line must be repaired, Major,” and, immediately went forth under a terrible barrage.
