Smith (ASN: 2291179), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the Medical Detachment, 6th Engineer Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces,
at Claire Chenes Woods, France, on 20 October 1918, in the morning, Private Smith established a small dressing station, and under continuous shell fire and machine gun fire worked all day and far into the night dressing the wounded. Without regard for his personal safety, he made repeated trips during the day into the open under machine gun fire and brought in wounded men.
