By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private William Montieth (ASN: 157971), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company A, 6th Engineer Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Montieth was on duty on 15 July 1918, in the Bois d’Aigremont, France. When two of his company officers were badly wounded during a severe artillery fire, he showed great courage and disregard for personal safety by volunteering with three of his fellow soldiers to carry these officers to a dressing station. He was killed in the performance of this act.
