By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Robert A. Gardner (ASN: 157710), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 6th Engineer Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the evening of 29 March 19189, just after the order to “Stand To” had been given, a man jumped into the traverse of Corporal Gardner’s bay from the rear. He approached Corporal Gardner and asked him several suspicious questions concerning the trenches. The man then continued along the trenches, in the direction of the road, asking the same questions of the men whom he passed. Corporal Gardner followed him and apprehended him in the four bay from the road.
