By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Walter D. Brown (ASN: 158596), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 6th Engineer Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the night of 20 October 1918, near Cunel, France, in Claire Chenes Wood, Sergeant Brown with two men preceded his company in front of our own front line positions around the edge of he wood. Along the northwestern side, he found none of our own troops but encountered a small party of Germans. Having been ordered to make no noise because of drawing shell fire on his own men, he attacked them single-handed. He captured three prisoners while one or two escapes, as he could not fire. He turned his prisoners over to the platoon which followed and proceeded around the wood.
