By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant First Class John K. Hammer (ASN: 157788), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company A, 6th Engineer Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant First Class Hammer showed great courage and resourcefulness in evacuating wounded during the hostile artillery fire, 15 July 1918, in the Bois d’Aigremont. When the driver of a Ford ambulance at the dressing station of his organization became a casualty, he assumed control of the ambulance and continued the work of evacuation under heavy shell fire until relieved.
