By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers), [then Sergeant] United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 6th Engineer Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Harriman showed extraordinary heroism in action near Crezancy, France, 15 – 16 July 1918. Assisting in the removal of the wounded, Lieutenant Harriman drove an ambulance throughout the entire night, continuing until several hits by the enemy completely disabled his machine. The next morning he led his men into the trenches through an intense shelling, and remained in command for 12 hours after being wounded.
