By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Roy W. Meears (ASN: 1550713), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery C, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Meears showed extraordinary bravery and devotion to duty and skill in action near Cierges, France, on 12 October 1918. Private Meears was a driver and when the battery was shelled going into position on this night, Private Meears, the other two drivers having deserted their teams, took charge of the entire six horses and in spite of the heavy fire, brought the teams and lumber back to the echelon.
