By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private William H. Lively (ASN: 1431330), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery D, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Lively displayed extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty during the battles of the Argonne and the Meuse, 26 September to 22 November 1918. He repeatedly brought up hot food under the most trying conditions and intensive shell fire to the firing positions and thereby assisted greatly in keeping up the fighting qualities of his organization, otherwise cut off from supplies.
