By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private John Lillis (ASN: 1550705), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery C, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Lillis displayed extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty under heavy shell fire at Montfaucon, France, on 6 – 7 October 1918. Private Lillis was in charge of the litter bearers of Battery C. During the most intense shellfire when the Germans were adjusting on the battery, Private Lillis evacuated every wounded man immediately, making four trips to the Red Cross station through heavy fire and gas on the afternoon of 6 October 1918. He sought no shelter for himself when the remainder of the battery had taken to their dugouts, and by his example kept his squad together and prevented much suffering by evacuating all wounded immediately.
