    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class Daniel J. Hartnett (ASN: 1550080), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Headquarters Company, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private First Class Hartnett displayed extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in action. Near Cunel, France, on 27 October 1918, Private Hartnett drove up from the echelon with food for battalion headquarters through the most severe and accurate shelling of the road. Not only on this occasion, but twice each day, Private Hartnett supplied rations to the front, having to traverse a road continually shelled with varied intensity.
