By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Cook William Harris (ASN: 1551035), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery E, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Cook Harris demonstrated conspicuous bravery and steadfast devotion to duty at Les Norvins Ferme, France, on 15 July 1918, when although suffering from gas poisoning he continued to work at his kitchen and prepare rations for the battery in spite of the heavy shelling which carried away part of the roof over him.
