By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Harold I. Sumner (ASN: 1550274), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery A, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Corporal Sumner displayed conspicuous services in battle near Petit Bordeaux Woods, France, on 15 July 1918, in continuing, with other members of the gun squad, to serve his piece and keeping up the fire on the enemy without interruption, in spite of the efforts of the enemy to silence the battery and when several shells burst very near, breaking a spoke in each wheel of the gun and denting the steel of the gun tube itself.
