Simmons, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Corporal Simmons displayed exceptional courage at Montfaucon, France, 8 October 1918. He voluntarily assisted in repairing and replacing in position, a captured German battery, then acted as Chief of Section, laid the guns and set fuses. Later when it became necessary to move he aided in loading the trucks with enemy ammunition and in the new position again took up the work of Section Chief. All this work which was performed under heavy enemy shell fire, was outside of his duties as a member of the Ordnance Field Force.
