By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant William K. Severy (ASN: 1550612), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery C, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Severy demonstrated extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in action near Montfaucon, France, on 6 – 7 October 1918. Sergeant Severy maintained communication by repairing telephone lines across a small valley which was constantly swept by shellfire and kept full of gas for the two days. Sergeant Severy was on duty for thirty-six hours continuously, and repaired each break in the lines immediately, not even awaiting a lull in the enemy shelling.
