By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Frank McKiernan (ASN: 1550606), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery C, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montfaucon, France, on 7 October 1918, Sergeant McKiernan showed extraordinary bravery, devotion to duty and skill in handling his gun crews and serving his piece. After three members of his gun crew were wounded, Sergeant McKiernan himself took up the duties of No. 1 and continued the barrage until his gun was hit and put out of action by hostile shell fire.
