By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Sergeant James F. Murphy (ASN: 1550300), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery D, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, First Sergeant Murphy displayed extraordinary heroism during the battles of the Argonne and the Meuse-Argonne, 3 October to 11 November 1918. When most of the officers of his organization were killed or wounded, he took command on several occasions, and by his conduct under most intensive fire, inspired the men and assisted materially in keeping the morale and efficiency of his batter up to a high standard.
