    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Sergeant John Auldoon (ASN: 1550605), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery C, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, First Sergeant Auldoon displayed extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in action near Chateau-Thierry, France, on 14 – 15 July 1918. Then Telephone Sergeant, he repeatedly left a place of safety to repair lines, under extremely heavy shelling of gas and high explosive. He always refused to send a linesman, but insisted on going himself to the scene of danger, thereby setting an example of courage and fearless devotion to duty which inspired his men. Through Sergeant Auldoon’s efforts, communication was maintained at extremely critical phases of the German attack when all other lines had been shot out.
