By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Lewis B. Dean, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Dean displayed exceptional bravery and judgment in the performance of his duties as Battalion Adjutant in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, October and November 1918. In spite of the fact that every other member of his battalion staff was a casualty, he continued to perform his duties regardless of heavy enemy fire. While engaged in his duties his horse was killed under him.
