By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Field Artillery) George W. L. Prettyman, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Captain Prettyman displayed exceptional courage and judgment on the Marne, at St. Mihiel and in the Argonne. While acting as Battery Commander he was a constant example to his men, maintaining coolness and accuracy among the gun crews after they had undergone heavy casualties. After his Battalion Commander and other superior officers were casualties, he assumed command of the battalion and despite serious losses of officers, men and horses, continued to advance and to give infantry units much needed artillery support.
