By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Charles H. Rhoads, Corporal Claude C. Corbett, Corporal Ray B. Hilbert, and Corporal William F. Hess, United States Army, are cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded them. While serving with the 18th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Corporals Rhoads, Corbett, Hilbert, and Hess, by their cool and efficient work at Le Perle Farm, France, on the night of 14 July 1918, in their first action under fire, which was at all times very intense, greatly helped in the efficiency of the battery’s fire.
