By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) John T. White, Jr., United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 18th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant White displayed exemplary coolness and courage in conducting the fire of his platoon near La Perle Farm, on the night and morning of 15 July 1918. His coolness and absolute disregard for personal danger steadied and inspired courage in the men of his crew, and kept his piece in action under a withering enemy fire. During the entire engagement he went from one piece to another, encouraging and directing his men in laying and firing the pieces, and obtaining more ammunition.
