    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class Ray Ward, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Medical Detachment, 18th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Ward accompanied Sergeant Dalton about three hundred meters through heavy gas and shell fire to bring to the battalion First Aid Station at La Perle Farm, France, a severely wounded soldier. This task was made very difficult by intense darkness, but was executed in a very creditable and efficient manner. He worked faithfully and unceasingly during the bombardments of 14 – 17 July 1918.
