By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Paul W. Kuhnel, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Headquarters Company, 18th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Corporal Kuhnel was constantly on duty maintaining communication to the Post of Command, 1st Battalion, 18th Field Artillery at La Perle Farm, France, under heavy shell fire, until severely wounded on 17 July 1918, while repairing broken lines. On his own initiative he was at work repairing a line the moment communication was broken, regardless of the danger of shell fire to which he was subjected.
