By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) George Knapp, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with as Telephone Officer, 1st Battalion, 18th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Knapp worked continuously from 20 July 1918 in efforts to keep up communication with his batteries one kilometer north of Le Donjon Farm, France. After eight of his telephone men had become casualties, he redoubled his efforts with new men to keep up communication. Under shell fire, he rescued Corporal Kuhmel, Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion detail, who had been wounded.
