By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Thomas A. Harwood, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 18th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Harwood displayed exemplary coolness and courage in conducting the fire of his platoon, near La Perle Farm, on the night and morning of 15 July 1918. During a severe gas and shell bombardment, his coolness and disregard for danger steadied and inspired courage in his men, who were under fire for the first time. During the entire period of the intense bombardment, he went from piece to piece, encouraging the members of the gun crews, and assisted in the proper laying of the piece.
