    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private William E. Ward, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Headquarters Company, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the night of 14 July 1918, between Courboin and Greves Farm, France, Private Ward showed greatest courage in driving the Commanding Officer’s car over shell-swept roads in order that the Commanding Officer might reach the battalions in order to direct the operation of the artillery fire. All during the night Private Ward was exposed to fire, his car being hit twice, and it was only due to his skill and fearlessness that the machine was not entirely demolished.
