    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Joseph Spano, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery D, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, during the Second Battle of the Marne, in the vicinity of Courboin and Greves Ferme, France, Private Spano displayed undaunted courage and coolness by driving his ration cart time after time along a road which was continually shelled and bombed and frequently raked with machine gun fire from aeroplanes. No time of day or night nor extent of enemy activity prevented him from bringing the rations to the men at the guns, thereby enabling them to perform their duties with great efficiency. On 22 July 1918, at Charteves, he alone, willingly brought the rolling kitchen with hot food along a road heavily bombed and lighted by flares from planes, delivering the food at the guns.
