By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Michael J. Smith (ASN: 1038416), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Smith served his battery courageously and efficiently at the action on the Marne until seriously wounded 23 July 1918. On 15 July 1918, he voluntarily carried ammunition by hand for more than a mile over shell-swept roads, when ammunition at the battery had been exhausted. He served his battery throughout the Argonne action, being at all times calm and courageous in the face of danger, performing his duties in a soldierly manner.
