By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private John J. O’Brien (ASN: 1038389), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private O’Brien served as cannoneer courageously and efficiently throughout the actions on the Marne, at St. Mihiel and in the Argonne. During the Marne engagement, 15 July 1918, he voluntarily carried ammunition by hand more than a mile distant over heavily shelled roads when all ammunition had been expended and it was impossible to get caissons to battery positions.
