By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Daniel W. Mellen (ASN: 1038381), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Mellen served his battery faithfully and efficiently during the actions on the Marne, St. Mihiel, and the Argonne. On the night of 15 July 1918, during the Marne engagement, he volunteered his services as driver after having been on duty about thirty-six hours, and assisted in hauling ammunition from a nearby battery throughout the remainder of the night without food or rest.
