By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private John Allen (ASN: 1038329), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Allen served with his battery courageously and efficiently throughout the entire action on the Marne and at St. Mihiel. During the action north of Verdun on 13 October 1918, he was a member of the crew of a forward gun and served his piece faithfully until the last round of ammunition had been fired, all while being under heavy shell, machinegun and rifle fire and being severely wounded.
