By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Cook Samuel L. Carson, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery D, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, near Greves Ferme, France, during the entire day of incessant bombardment, Cook Carson disregarded his own personal safety, stayed by the kitchen, notwithstanding its prominence as a target by reason of the smoke arising therefrom, prepared hot meals and served them to those men of any organization who cared for food until all the rations on hand were expended.
