By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Tom E. Steele, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Supply Company, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Corporal Steele displayed exceptional heroism in the Marne Defensive, 15 July 1918. Under terrific fire, he conducted a wagon train for ten kilometers, often being forced to leave the roads because these were blocked with dead horses and men. By his coolness and good judgment he was able to accomplish his mission without casualties in his command.
