By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal William A. Stauffer, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery D, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, near Greves Ferme, France, Corporal Stouffer, while in charge of the telephone line of the Battery, ran his lines to the Battalion Post of Command and kept all lines repaired under terrific enemy shell fire. He was always the first to endeavor to keep the lines open for communication; his action in so doing set the finest example of coolness and courage.
