By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Samuel Ritterbush, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Supply Company, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Battle of the Marine, Corporal Ritterbush, with remarkable coolness and efficiency, personally led all the ration wagons to the 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery and regardless of the fact that the roads were ever subjected to the most severe shell fire, he succeeded in amply supplying every unit of the battalion with food. With an absolute disregard of shell fire, a judgment that is seldom equaled in the ranks of any Army, and initiative and perseverance that acknowledges no defeat, he so inspired the men under him as to cause them to gladly follow him through all the dangers encountered in the Marne Offensive; and even though it required many extra hours of labor and many additional miles of travel, no mission entrusted to him was ever left unfinished.
