By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Harvey Knuth (ASN: 1038117), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery A, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the forenoon of 15 July 1918, when the French machine guns had retired to a position in the rear of the battery, thereby exposing the battery to the direct fire of the enemy machine guns, and after the battery had fired all the available ammunition anywhere in the vicinity, he volunteered to stay by the guns and to spike them. This he succeeded in doing and returned to the battery echelon. Later, on 12 October 1918, Corporal Knuth was grievously wounded while rendering gallant and distinguished service.
