By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Carl H. Swanson (ASN: 107144), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery C, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Argonne engagement on 9 November 1918, when the battery moved into Cunel Woods, in the absence of officers Sergeant Swanson took charge of the battery, got the guns in position and the men under cover while under shell fire from three sides. During the Marne, St. Mihiel and Argonne Meuse engagements he showed great bravery and coolness, rendering invaluable serv iced as Signal Sergeant; maintaining communication during the heaviest actions.
