    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant William Suchan (ASN: 170054), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery A, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Janvier Farm, on the early morning of 15 July 1918, Sergeant Suchan was with his piece and gun crew on a road some distance to the flank from the main battery position, where a harassing fire had been fired. The preliminary bombardment by the Germans for their advance had begun as Sergeant Suchan had finished firing and was to return with his piece to the battery. The road over which he had to haul his piece by hand was swept with shell fire; he went ahead with utter disregard thereof and succeeded in returning his piece so as to participate in the S.O.S. barrage. Sergeant Suchan’s disregard of his own safety was such as to infuse the greatest morale to his men.
