By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Stephan Smith, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, while Chief of Section in charge of a forward piece north of Verdun, on 13 October 1918, Sergeant Smith displayed great bravery by voluntarily crossing fire-swept field for a distance of four hundred yards after his own piece had been destroyed by a direct hit. He joined another crew and continued to fire. He also aided in evacuating wounded to the aid station under heavy fire.
