    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Irving A. Shults (ASN: 170070), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Shults served with his battery faithfully and courageously throughout the entire operations of the Marne, at St. Mihiel, and the Argonne. He voluntarily carried ammunition by hand from a dump more than a mile distant, on 15 July 1918, when ammunition of the battery had been exhausted and it was impossible to bring up caissons on account of heavy bombardment. In the Argonne he served as gunner on a forward piece and when his gun was destroyed by a direct hit, rendered valuable aid in assisting his wounded companions, though slightly wounded.
