By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant David D. Reade (ASN: 2298115), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery C, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, as a Machine Gun Corporal, Sergeant Reade worked heroically for two nights and a day without rest or sleep in carrying ammunition from a position more than a kilometer away, through thick woods and impassable muddy roads, in order that the battery might continue its fire. Then, he voluntarily served as gunner when all members of a gun crew had been killed or wounded, and unceasingly worked most faithfully and courageously in that capacity through all engagements on the Marne.
