By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Lester Ratz (ASN: 1038252), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the operation on the Marine, Sergeant Ratz was acting as Ammunition Sergeant and was untiring in his efforts to provide ammunition for the Battery, it frequently being necessary to expose himself to heavy shell fire in transporting ammunition from the road to battery positions. He was always calm and courageous in the face of danger and on many occasions rendered valuable assistance to wounded men not only of his own battery but of nearby infantry. During the Argonne, he was Chief of a Gun Section and when his gun crew was struck by a shell, dressed his wounded men, assisted them to a dressing statin and then returned to his post under heavy shell fire.
