By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Gilbert Powell (ASN: 1038568), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery C, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the heavy bombardment of the night of 14 – 15 July 1918, Sergeant Powell showed the rare ability and courage that he had always displayed in all engagements form the Marne, St. Mihiel, Argonne-Meuse. On the night of 23 October 1918, after many days of severe strain and tireless effort, he took forward his piece to a dangerously exposed forward position, where by his coolness and leadership he executed his mission under the most difficult and trying circumstances.
