By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Leo Jaskowiak (ASN: 554821), Corporal John J. Hewitt (ASN (554894), and Private First Class Joseph Chouinard (ASN: 554870), United States Army, are cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded them. While serving with Company B, 9th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, these soldiers volunteered to carry machine gun ammunition to the relief of the machine gun companies sup[porting the advance of the 38th Infantry Regiment, on the heights above Jaulgonne, France, on or about 21 July 1918, which entailed crossing areas constantly swept by machine gun fire and under heavy shelling, with consequent risk of their lives.
