By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Charles Adkinson (ASN: 170058), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the engagement on the Marne, 15 July to 2 August 1918, while acting as assistant to the reconnaissance officer, Sergeant Adkinson displayed great courage and rendered valuable services to his command by making reconnaissances under great difficulties and danger. North of Verdin, he displayed great courage and devotion to duty by making a reconnaissance in the Bois de Cunel and carried an important message back to his battery, although seriously gassed.
