By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Jay F. Hofstetter, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Hofstetter displayed exceptional heroism near Greves Farm, France, 14 – 15 July 1918. Discovering that two guns of a French battery on his left had lost their gun crew as a result of enemy fire, he received permission of the French Commander to man these guns. With eight men of his battery, who volunteered for this duty, he fired these guns until all available fuses had been exhausted. Throughout this period he was under intense enemy fire and his cool and courageous conduct instilled confidence in his command.
