By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) James A. Hennely, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Hennely displayed exceptional heroism near St. Eugene, France, 15 July 1918, While acting as Liaison Officer with the 38th Infantry Regiment, it became necessary for him to carry an important message to the artillery. On this mission he was wounded and captured by the enemy. Taking advantage of a diversion by our own infantry, he escaped, and although wounded a second time, succeeded in reaching the artillery with his message, enabling them to direct their fire most advantageously.
