By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert L. Butler, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 9th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, 9 – 18 October 1918, when necessarily exposing himself in order to select the most advantageous positions for his guns, Lieutenant Butler went over the top with the Infantry and was mortally wounded, but directed that others be evacuated before himself as he considered them more seriously wounded than himself.
