By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Vernon A. Holden, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 9th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at all times under heavy shell fire, Lieutenant Holden displayed the greatest coolness and good judgment, and as Train Officer he was responsible for the prompt delivery of ammunition and supplies to the troops on the front line under fire and adverse conditions. He never failed and was killed while conducting an ammunition train to the front at a most critical time.
